Project - Gorgon Gas Development: Backfill Fields
Chevron Australia Pty Ltd, acting on behalf of the Gorgon Joint Venturers (GJV), is the operator of the Gorgon Gas Development, located off the northwest coast of Western Australia (WA).
The first phase of the Gorgon Gas Development, the Gorgon Foundation Project (GFP), comprises the production of natural gas from the Gorgon and Jansz-Io fields (the first of the Greater Gorgon Area fields to be developed). Hydrocarbon is transported from the offshore fields via two subsea pipeline networks to the Gas Treatment Plant (GTP) on Barrow Island, where it is processed for export as liquefied natural gas (LNG) or piped to the mainland for WA domestic gas users. This phase of the Gorgon Gas Development commenced operation in 2015.
The next phase of the development, the Backfill Fields Development, comprises the production of natural gas from seven backfill fields within the Greater Gorgon Area: Chandon, Chrysaor, Dionysus, Eurytion, Geryon, Semele, and West Tryal Rocks. The purpose of the Backfill Fields Development is to maintain gas supply to the existing GTP on Barrow Island to sustain production rates of LNG and domestic gas. The Backfill Fields Development covers survey, drilling, installation and commissioning, operation, and decommissioning phases. All the backfill fields are subsea tie-back developments connected to existing GFP infrastructure. The seven backfill fields will be developed or co-developed over multiple stages, with the co-development of the Geryon and Eurytion fields earmarked as the first stage of the Backfill Fields Development. The end of life for the Backfill Fields Development is notionally ~2070 (aligned with the overall Gorgon Gas Development), with each backfill field having its own end of field life.
At its closest, the Development Area for the Backfill Fields Development is located ~52 km from Barrow Island and ~124 km from Onslow. Water depths across the Development Area range from ~100–1,400 m.
