Activity Description
On behalf of the Gorgon Joint Venturers, Chevron Australia Pty Ltd (CAPL) is developing and operating the Gorgon Gas Development. To date, the Gorgon Gas Development hydrocarbon system includes infrastructure and activities associated with the initial field development, Gorgon Stage 2 (GS2) and Jansz–Io Compression (J–IC), collectively referred to as the Gorgon Foundation Project (GFP). Existing infrastructure includes offshore production wells within the Gorgon and Jansz–Io gas fields, and the feed gas pipeline system. The feed gas pipeline system gathers and transports gas to the Gorgon Gas Treatment Plant on Barrow Island.

To support the reliability of the offshore gas gathering systems, CAPL plans to install a fibre-optic and electrical control umbilical (referred to as the umbilical) between the offshore Jansz Central Distribution Unit (CDU) and Gorgon CDU. The umbilical will provide electrical power and fibre optic communications to the Jansz gas field. Components of the existing GFP Jansz umbilical (e.g. chemical, hydraulic, and control lines) will remain in use.

The use of umbilicals to support the operation of the wells and manifolds is within scope of the Gorgon Gas Development (as described in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement / Environmental Review and Management Programme for the Proposed Gorgon Development [Ref. 29]) and therefore subsequent approvals under the Environmental Protection Act 1986 (WA) and Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cth) (EPBC Act). To maintain safety and reliability, maintenance and repairs of the approved elements of the hydrocarbon system are also inherently within scope of the Gorgon Gas Development.

This EP documents the assessment and management of potential environmental impacts and risks associated with the petroleum activity.

This EP has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006 (Cth) (OPGGS Act) and the OPGGS(E)R, as administered and for regulatory acceptance by the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environment Management Authority (NOPSEMA).
