Chevron Australia Pty Ltd is planning to remove nine non-operational, legacy wellheads and associated infrastructure within WA-37-L, WA-36-L, WA-47-L, WA-89-R, WA-73-R, WA-40-L and WA-5-R. The wellheads are located in water depths ranging from approximately 130m to 1,350 m. The wellheads are located more than 50 km from the Montebello Islands, 63 km from Barrow Island, and 135 km from the mainland coast of WA.
The activities outlined in the EP include removal of wellheads and associated infrastructure, vessel operations, and ROV surveys. Wellhead infrastructure will be removed using either a diamond wire saw, internal abrasive cutting tool or mechanical internal cutting tool. Tool selection will be based on water depth, wellhead structure, access and other factors.
The EP documents the assessment and management of potential environmental impacts and risks associated with the petroleum activity. The EP has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006 (Cth) (OPGGS Act) and the OPGGS(E)R, as administered and for regulatory acceptance by the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environment Management Authority (NOPSEMA).
Wellhead removal activities are planned to commence in 2027 however the activities may occur at any time of year within three years of EP acceptance. The activity is expected to take approximately five weeks and may be undertaken across multiple campaigns. The proposed schedule is indicative and may change due to vessel availability, weather, and other unforeseen circumstances.
