Description

Chevron Australia, on behalf of the Gorgon Joint Venture, operates the Gorgon Project in Western Australia. The Gorgon Project comprises offshore production wells and pipeline infrastructure that gathers natural gas from the Gorgon and Jansz–Io gas fields and transports it to a facility on Barrow Island for processing.

The Gorgon Gas Development Gorgon and Jansz Feed Gas Pipeline and Wells Operations (Commonwealth Waters) Environment Plan (EP) covers activities in Commonwealth Waters associated with the commissioning, start‐up and operation of the Gorgon and Jansz feed gas pipeline system and wells. Activities occurring outside the Operational Area or in the State jurisdiction are not included in the EP.

The Gorgon gas field is located within production licences WA‐37‐L and WA‐38‐L, approximately 130 km off the north‐west coast of Western Australia, and 65 km north‐west of Barrow Island in water depths of approximately 200 m. The Jansz–Io gas field is located within production licences WA‐36‐L, WA‐39‐L and WA‐40‐L approximately 200 km off the north‐west coast of Western Australia in water depths of approximately 1,350 m. The wells associated with the EP are located in WA‐36‐L, WA‐37‐L, WA‐38‐L and WA‐39‐L. The pipeline licences associated with the EP are WA‐19‐PL and WA‐20‐PL.

The initial field development comprised of wells and subsea infrastructure, including the feed gas pipeline system, which was commissioned in 2015. The initial field development has been supplemented by Gorgon Stage 2 (GS2), which comprises additional wells and subsea infrastructure within the Gorgon and Jansz–Io gas fields.

To maintain gas supply to the facility on Barrow Island and to sustain current gas production rates, Chevron Australia plans to install a subsea compression station and associated infrastructure in the Jansz–Io gas fields. Key infrastructure to be installed includes:
- Subsea compression station and associated equipment and spools
- A normally unattended, floating field control station anchored to the seabed by 12 mooring lines
- An umbilical to supply power from Barrow Island to the field control station, and power cables, known as flying leads, from the field control station to the subsea compression station
- Pipeline crossings and rock stabilisation as required.

The EP has been updated to account for the commissioning, start-up and operation of this infrastructure, which is expected to commence from 2026 / 2027. Note that installation of the subsea compression station and associated infrastructure is outside the scope of this EP and is covered in a separate approval (the Gorgon Gas Development Pipeline and Subsea Infrastructure Installation and Pre-Commissioning Environment Plan).

Gorgon Project operations are expected to continue for the nominal operational design life of 50 years. Inspection, maintenance and repair activities may occur at any time during commissioning, start‐up and operation.

The scope of the EP covers petroleum activities associated with the commissioning, start‐up, and operation of the Gorgon and Jansz pipeline system, wells and associated infrastructure in Commonwealth Waters. The petroleum activities addressed in the EP include:
- commissioning and start‐up
- operations
- inspections, maintenance and repair (IMR) activities, and
- field support activities including support vessel activities and helicopter transfer.
