Location map - Activity: Petrel 3, Petrel 4 and Tern 2 Suspended Wells (refer to description)
Description

History
The Petrel Field was discovered in 1969 when Petrel-1 was drilled. Petrel-3 was drilled in 1981 and Petrel-4 in 1988. In 2010 GDF SUEZ (GDFS) became a JV Partner with Santos and Petrel-7 was drilled in 2011. In May 2013 operatorship was handed over from Santos to GDFS Bonaparte. In 2015 GDF SUEZ Bonaparte was renamed
ENGIE and the operator was renamed ENGIE Bonaparte Pty. Ltd. These wells were suspended and we are now proceeding with implementing permanent seals.
Activities
To monitor that the status of these wells remains unchanged, we will undertake inspections using Remote Operated Vehicles (ROV), which will be deployed from a support vessel. This survey is notionally proposed to take place in October of 2020. There will be no discharges into the environment associated with planned activities. At this stage, we have assessed and ranked potential impacts from inspection activities as posing a low or very low risk to the environment.
What we are doing
We are undertaking small scale decommissioning of three gas wells, including Petrel-3, Petrel-4 and Tern-2, in October 2020. These wells have been suspended and the decommissioning is intended to permanently seal the wells. The first step in this process is to inspect the wells to confirm their condition, before proceeding with decommissioning. While we anticipate that this activity will have a very low impact on the environment, our final assessment will be informed by input from relevant stakeholders
Emergency Arrangements
While the potential for unplanned event such as the loss of well control is low, the assessment of this scenario has also been undertaken. In such an event hydrocarbons will evaporate and dissipate quickly and with no predicted contact to shorelines and sensitive locations. Arrangements will be put in place by ENGIE to respond in such an event.
What Next
After inspecting the wells we will determine the best approach to decommissioning. We will ensure that any stakeholders who have registered an interest will remain informed of the outcomes of our activities.
The activity description and location map have been extracted from the environment plan submitted.
